Fungi - Voyage into the Mycelium

Explore the fascinating world of fungi with mycologist Dr Christian Taylor, Emma from Dartmoor's Daughter and Daniel Thompson-Mills of Steward Community Woodland. You will already have a basic knowledge of fungi and this intermediate level session will explore in more depth this marvellous kingdom of nature. Session will include:

  • Wood cavitation and insect accommodation

  • Fungal role in supporting Biodiversity

  • Latin names of 3 Divisions (Ascomycotina, Basidiomycota and Duetero / Myxomycotina).

  • Mycelial pairings

  • Microscope view of mycorrhizal roots

  • Microscope view of mycelium

  • Mated and unmated mycelia + clamp connections

  • The 3 outcomes of mycelial mating

  • Culturing mycelia from the wild

  • Cultivating mycelia - basic techniques

  • Smelling the Truffle

  • Tasting of any edibles if found, drinking immunitea

  • Latin names to be introduced more widely, alongside the common names


LEVEL: We will be walking at a slow pace with plenty of stops for approximately 2 miles. We will mostly be on woodland paths but there are gentle slopes to walk up and down.

Route is dependent on weather conditions and group pace.

LOCATION: Carpark below Steward Community Woodland. Driving directions/any final details will be emailed approximately a week before the walk; please remember to check your junk email folder. Car sharing is encouraged please as parking is limited and we lessen our impact on the environment through sharing. Thank you.


Tickets

FEE: £55 adults - Group size limited so pre-booking essential.

CANCELLATION: The event will go ahead come rain or shine. Payments are refunded (less the booking fee) for cancellations no less than six weeks before your walk or experience.

If you cancel after the six weeks, we would advise you please try to resell/pass on your ticket and/or we can try to re-sell your ticket (we sometimes have a waitlist although there is no guarantee) we can then offer a credit note for the ticket price (minus the £2 booking fee and minus a £5 admin fee).

Further Information

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Sturdy walking boots/shoes or wellies; warm layers; sunscreen; waterproof jacket and trousers (whatever the forecast); drink/flask and snacks. Please bring a fork/spoon and cup (to try any edibles if found and immunitea)
