Map Reading Made Fun For Families (for DNPA Mad About Mapping Week)

map reading family.jpg

Enjoy learning how to map read with your family. Map reading is a life-long skill that can be applied to walking, running, or just enjoying the great outdoors together. Families will work together to find natural and man-made features in the landscape using grid references and the four cardinal directions. There may even be a letterbox or two to find along the way! Each object found will add up to solve a puzzle.

Tickets

FEE: Free for families - This activity is funded by Dartmoor National Park Authority as part of their Mad About Mapping Week.

Group size is limited so pre-booking is essential. Due to Covid-precautions, we need to retain contact details for 21 days post-walk so please include your contact details (email and mobile/telephone when booking/paying.)

Location:

Lower Car Park at Haytor Visitors Centre, TQ13 9XT on B3387, 3 miles west of Bovey Tracey

Car Sharing - Please car share in your ‘bubbles’ where possible. Parking is limited on Dartmoor. And sharing lessens our impact on the environment. Thank you.

Further Information:

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Sturdy walking boots; warm layers; sunscreen; waterproof jacket and trousers (whatever the forecast); walking poles if you have them; drink/flask and snack or picnic lunch.

Dogs - Sorry no dogs.

We also recommend bringing personal masks, a pair of disposable gloves, and a personal first aid kit. (From a safety perspective, this offers additional protection against Covid-19 if there were to be an accident and first aid is required by me or the rescue teams. Sorry we know it seems onerous but, given current government guidelines, these are currently being proposed by all guides.)

LEVEL: EASY - approximately 2 miles with a relaxed pace and several stops. This activity is aimed at families with children between the age ranges of 6-11 years old. Your family should be comfortable spending 2-3 hours in open, hilly moorland terrain.

Route is dependent on weather conditions and group pace'.

CANCELLATION: The event will go ahead come rain or shine.

Dartmoor’s Daughter has received the ‘We’re Good to Go’ Industry Standard Certificate.  If you have a cold, flu, cough, temperature or are diagnosed with COVID-19 please do not join the walk. You will be able to transfer your booking to another walk.

RISK: Walks and activities are at your own risk. No liability accepted for accidents or incidents.
