Join us for a guided walk and talk to visit Drizzlecombe – the best preserved and most impressive of all Dartmoor’s prehistoric ceremonial sites. The complex (Thruselcombe to give it its correct name) includes three stone rows each terminated by magnificent standing stones, the large cairn known as Giant’s Basin, plus over 20 other types of prehistoric burial sites.
Yellowmead contains an impressive fourfold stone circle containing well over 100 stones, plus a nearby strange arrangement of stone alignments. This site has been the subject of a geophysical survey
En route we will see how humans have modified and changed this stunning landscape to suit their own needs over the last 4000 years. This includes prehistoric settlement sites; medieval settlements (including the longest long house on Dartmoor); remains of tinworking from C13th – C19th, plus rabbit warrening centred at Ditsworthy Farm, at one time the largest rabbit warren in England, and the location used in Spielberg’s War Horse; plus a few other curiosities on the way. In total there are over 400 archaeological sites recorded within the area of the walk.
Dartmoor’s Daugher is collaborating with archaeologist Jane Marchand, the recently retired Head of Archaeology for the Dartmoor National Park Authority for this walk.

Level: 2 out of 5. The walk is relatively easy with some uneven terrain and boggy ground in places. You need to be comfortable spending 3-4 hours in hilly moorland terrain.

The nearest postcode is PL20 6PF but please don't rely on this to get you to the exact location. Parking is limited so please carshare where possible (get in touch to offer or ask for a life) and get there early as the space soon fills up.
What to bring: Dartmoor weather is highly changeable so please bring/wear plenty of warm layers, sunscreen, sturdy hiking boots, waterproof trousers and jackets (even if the forecast is fine), lunch/snacks and drink.
