Walk with Dartmoor’s Daughter to hear myths and legends about dragons living on Dartmoor and in Devon. And to see a little cave where one may have made its lair!
Stories include the dragon near Hound Tor who liked to make a lunch out of the local farmer’s sheep and cattle; the lone travellers who feared to walk too near the dragon’s lair at O’Brook in case they were eaten; the tin-miners who reported seeing ‘dragons breath’ and ‘fiery dragons’, as well as their ‘dragon lodes’ at Eyelsbarrow mine; the ‘serpent lines’ of Britain; and more...

Further Information
LEVEL: Easy - approx 2 miles with two very short rocky sections to walk up and over.
WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Dartmoor weather is unpredictable and forecasts are unreliable, so please wear/bring sturdy walking shoes; sunscreen; warm layers; and waterproof jacket and trousers. And please bring snacks and drinks with you.
We also recommend bringing personal masks, a pair of disposable gloves each, and a personal first aid kit. (From a safety perspective, this offers additional protection against Covid-19 if there were to be an accident and first aid is required by me or the rescue teams. Sorry we know it seems onerous but, given current government guidelines, these are currently being proposed by all guides.)
MEETING TIME/LOCATION: 9.15am for 9.30am walking start. We aim to finish at 12.30pm.
Swallerton Gate Car Park is under (Great) Hound Tor. Grid Ref SX739792. The car park is approximately 2 1/2 miles west of Haytor Vale on the B3387 - from this direction, turn right to Hound Tor & Manaton. Continue for 1 1/2 mile (approx.) to Swallerton Gate Cross - the car park is signposted with a 'P' to the right.
Nearest postcode for SatNav is TQ13 9XG but we don't recommend following a sat nav as it is unlikely to take you to an exact Dartmoor location. Please get in touch if you need directions.
