Navigation Skills for Beginners (or Refresher)

navigation training.jpg

Learn map and compass skills in a hands-on and practical walking workshop. Build confidence to explore new places and walk off the beaten track. We will also discover other ways to feel your way through the landscape e.g.: natural navigation.

'Brilliant day practicing navigation skills - map reading, taking bearings and pacing distances to hidden features, then picking the best routes across the open moor. The day was lead in a very friendly and welcoming way with lots of information shared and the opportunity to learn in a non-pressured environment.' Recent participant

Tickets

FEE: £40 per adult. Bring a friend/partner and get a 10% discount off your tickets! Group size is limited to ensure a personalised learning experience so pre-booking is essential. We need to retain contact details for 21 days post-walk so please include your contact details (email and mobile/telephone when booking/paying.) And check your emails 12-24 hours before the date.

Further Information

LEVEL: Moderate - the walk is approximately 4 miles with a relaxed pace and many stops to practice navigation techniques but you need to be happy spending approximately 3 hours in hilly moorland terrain.

MEETING POINT: Bel Tor corner car park between Poundsgate and Dartmeet. The car park is about 15 minutes drive from the A38 'Peartree' exit signposted to Ashburton, Princetown and Dartmeet (there are 2 x A38 exits signposted to Ashburton, be sure to take the correct one).
Car park Grid reference is SX694731.
Nearest postcode is TQ13 7PS but please don't rely on this to get you to the exact location, it likely won't on Dartmoor!
Please get in touch if you need directions.

WHAT TO WEAR/BRING: Map (OL28 Ordnance Survey map of Dartmoor), compass*, drink, snacks, warm layers as we will be stopping many times, sunscreen, waterproof clothing (whatever the forecast) and sturdy walking boots.
*For advice on compasses, Silva is recommended and a good source is Dartmoor National Park Visitors Centres or dash4it.co.uk
Any of the following would be fine: Silva Starter 8; Silva Field; Silva Ranger; Silva Expedition 4.
Dogs - it is difficult to handle a map and compass whilst also having a dog with you, so we don't recommend they join you.

We also recommend bringing personal masks, a pair of disposable gloves each, and a personal first aid kit. (From a safety perspective, this offers additional protection against Covid-19 if there were to be an accident and first aid is required by me or the rescue teams. Sorry we know it seems onerous but, given current government guidelines, these are currently being proposed by all guides.)

FACILITATORS: Verran Townsend is an experienced and qualified Mountain Leader (ML). Emma Cunis aka Dartmoor's Daughter creates walks and nature-connection experiences to enhance health, wellbeing, and performance. She is a qualified Hill & Moorland Leader (HML).

CANCELLATION POLICY: The event will go ahead come rain or shine. In fact rain and fog are great training aids! Sorry no refunds if you change your mind about attending.

Dartmoor’s Daughter has received the ‘Good to Go’ Industry Standard Certificate.  If you have a cold, flu, cough, temperature or are diagnosed with COVID-19 please do not join a walk if you have booked. You will be able to transfer your booking to another walk.

RISK: Walks and activities are at your own risk. No liability accepted for accidents or incidents.
